What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
My path to becoming a therapist was born out of my own experience struggling with addiction and unresolved trauma as a young adult. I found the resources available to me at that time to be grossly inadequate and it didn’t seem like anyone would even acknowledge my struggle, other than people who had been through it themselves. When I found the right help and was able to recover, I wanted to help others in a similar situation and be the kind of therapist I needed back then. I wanted to use my experience, combined with training and expertise in therapy, to really connect with people while offering licensed clinical care. Peer support is wonderful, but when someone understands the struggle and has the training to provide treatment it’s a win win in my book.

Education
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Master of Science, Addiction Counseling, 2021
My degree is a CACREP accredited counseling degree meeting the highest standards for professional counseling in general. In addition, my specialty area was in addiction recovery and the neurobiology involved in the counseling process. My degree sparked my interest in interventions such as EMDR and neurofeedback therapy and set me on a path to ground my practice in neuroscience based therapy.
Work History
From 2016 to 2021 I was an addiction counselor at a residential treatment center where I worked with about 130 clients taking them through 3-4 months of intensive counseling. During this time I was working on my graduate degree in counseling to expand my scope to include mental health and trauma related issues. In 2021, I completed my masters degree and was promoted to executive director of a mental health assessment program. I coordinated evaluations with a psychiatrist and neuropsychologist to help achieve more accurate diagnosis and build comprehensive treatment plans. We assisted individuals struggling with complex issues that were not responding to the usual standards of care. This is where I gained a deeper understanding of the neuroscience that can be applied to helping people recover from mental health issues and past trauma. In 2022 I launched my private practice, Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR PLLC, and began working with clients outside of my position as executive director. In 2023, I was offered the position of executive director of a residential mental health program in Elgin, TX, where I build a team of therapists, psychiatric providers, and medical professionals to provide residential care for clients who weren’t in need of hospitalization but were struggling to make progress in outpatient therapy. I insisted that the program be trauma focused as the majority of our clients had severe trauma histories underneath their more immediate and acute symptoms. In 2024, I decided to go into private practice full time. I found that where I feel most effective and engaged is in individual therapy with clients who are looking to heal from the wounds of their past. Trauma therapy is my calling and seeing clients reclaim their autonomy, agency over their mind and body, and optimism for their future is something that I feel honored to be a part of.
