It is not unusual for a family caregiver’s grief to be hidden behind other emotions. To understand and manage that grief, caregivers first must become aware of it. In my work with family caregivers over the years, I have had the honor and privilege of sitting with clients in their grief. I have noticed that, while caregivers may be able to recognize and give name to their grief experience, most often they do not recognize that the feelings they are experiencing are, in fact, part of the grieving process.
