What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I became a therapist because I saw firsthand how isolating and overwhelming caregiving can be. As a young CNA, I cared for people who felt forgotten and families who were exhausted. I also lost loved ones of my own and experienced the grief and burnout that come with caregiving. Over time, I realized that caregivers—both family and professional—deserve the same compassion and support they give others. That calling led me to study mindfulness, grief work, and counseling, and eventually to create Contemplative Caregiver LLC, where I help people find relief, resilience, and renewal.

Education
Naropa University, Master of Arts, Clinical Mental Health, 2020 — I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling from Naropa University. Naropa’s program blends Western clinical approaches with Eastern contemplative practices, emphasizing mindfulness, personal growth, and spiritual meaning in the healing process. During my studies, I focused on using mindfulness and nature-based techniques to support caregivers facing stress, grief, and burnout. I received advanced training in Gestalt therapy, ecotherapy, and transpersonal development.
While at Naropa, I also volunteered in caregiver support initiatives and contributed to workshops that combined art, mindfulness, and mental health education. I completed a clinical internship with a focus on trauma-informed care and contemplative psychotherapy. My time at Naropa shaped my counseling philosophy, emphasizing presence, compassionate inquiry, and helping clients explore resilience and meaning through life’s challenges.
Today, I continue to integrate Naropa’s contemplative approach into my counseling and group work, offering a grounded, creative, and mindful space for healing and growth.
Work HistoryMy journey in caregiving and mental health began in 2010 when I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), supporting older adults and people with dementia in nursing homes. I later worked in leadership at a home care agency, training more than 300 caregivers. In 2016, I moved to Boulder to earn my master’s in Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling at Naropa University, focusing on caregiver stress, grief, and mindfulness practices.
While in graduate school, I volunteered over 1,000 hours in an externship with Elite Cruises and Vacations, working alongside Kathy Shoaf, RN, who pioneered dementia-friendly retreats. I supported families and persons living with dementia on travel adventures, helping them safely enjoy excursions and build joyful memories. In 2021, I led a fishing trip in Alaska for four persons with dementia and their families. It became a powerful moment of community support and inspired my later work combining outdoor therapy and caregiver support.
Since 2018, I’ve built Contemplative Caregiver LLC to offer individual counseling, coaching, therapeutic groups, and retreats. My specialties include caregiver burnout, grief, aging, mindfulness-based therapy, and trauma-informed care. I also lead unique programs such as Brush With Grief, the Fishing Therapy Group, and the Caregiver Gaming Group, blending creative, nature-based, and community approaches to healing.
