In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
My approach to therapy is deeply influenced by my inquisitive, caring, detail-oriented, and humorous personality traits. I prioritize creating a supportive and empathetic environment, ensuring nothing important is overlooked. I am naturally inclined to ask probing questions and delve into deeper layers during sessions. I recognize the power of humor in therapy, using it to lighten the mood and invite authenticity into our space. I want to add that my culture as an Asian-American underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness in the therapeutic space.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
Therapy is rated E for Everyone. Unfortunately, in many societies, including the one in which I was raised, seeking mental health care carries a stigma, sometimes implying that one is somehow flawed or broken. I disagree with this perspective and in reality, I believe therapy presents an invaluable opportunity for individuals to embark on journeys of self-discovery and personal growth.
From my own journey, I've come to understand that therapy isn't reserved for those facing severe mental health issues. Rather, it's a tool for anyone seeking clarity, understanding, and personal development. Whether it's unpacking past experiences, gaining new perspectives, or developing strategies to overcome life's challenges, therapy offers a myriad of benefits that can enrich the lives of individuals from all walks of life.
