In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I am a very open, curious and empathic person which allows me to come to each session with my clients with an open, curious mind. Judgement does not come into sessions - what might be "right" for me or someone else does not matter; what matters is what works for the client. I also have a relaxed, quiet sense of humor which comes out from time to time in session. There is room for appropriate humor and laughter in session, which creates the space for different perspectives and brings the human-ness to some of life's hardest challenges.
How do you determine therapy goals with clients? What does that process look like?
After the initial few sessions I invite the client to share what they would like to gain from participating in therapy. I guide clients to turn those into goals that fit for them. After working together for some time, I may see additional things, or the client may point out additional things, that the client might like to address in sessions. It is always up to the client what they choose to address since therapy is for them and about them.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
I wish people knew that participating in therapy is for everyone and has nothing to do with being sick or crazy. We can all find things of benefit to taking time and making effort to make positive changes in our lives. The therapist is there to be a guide and supporter.
