In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?
My personal life experiences have shaped how I approach therapy and creating an environment where clients are heard and validated. I believe that we all have a story to tell, that has influenced our life choices, the paths we take, and where we decide to go after healing. These experiences have allowed me to have a better understanding of where the clients is coming from and giving a voice to those who may have never felt heard or seen. I believe that we all possess resiliency and the capabilities of overcoming our past to become the best version of who YOU want to be.
If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?
The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk has significantly impacted my approach to therapy in that it outlines the physiological and psychological impact of trauma on the brain and body especially for those who have experienced early childhood trauma or who struggle to recall traumatic events. With the experiences we develop methods of keeping ourselves safe, some which are helpful and at times, some that are not. Through therapy, we can address unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and actions to work towards wellness.
What does a first session with you look like?
During our first session, I will take time to get to know you and understand what brought you to therapy. We will explore historical information, current life circumstances, and your goals for therapy. I will discuss treatment plan options that you feel comfortable with as the most important aspect of therapy is your voice and being comfortable with the process.
