What does a first session with you look like?
In our first session together, we take the time to build a foundation of trust and understanding by exploring your personal history and what brings you to therapy. I create a supportive and nonjudgmental space where you can share at your own pace, discussing important aspects of your background, life experiences, and any current challenges you're facing. We’ll talk about your goals for therapy and what you hope to focus on during our time together, whether it's managing grief, easing symptoms of depression or anxiety, coping with a chronic illness, or simply finding more balance and peace in your life. This initial conversation helps me gain a holistic view of who you are, so we can collaboratively create a plan that’s meaningful and tailored to your unique needs.
What should we know about your experiences and background?
My ideal client is someone who is navigating the emotional and psychological challenges that come with grief, depression, anxiety, or chronic illness and is open to receiving support in a safe, nonjudgmental space. This individual may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about how to cope with their emotions, and is seeking guidance to better understand and manage their experiences. Whether they are dealing with the loss of a loved one, the weight of long-term illness, or persistent feelings of sadness and worry, they are ready to take the first step toward healing and personal growth. I work best with clients who are willing to engage in honest conversation, explore their inner world, and actively participate in developing tools and strategies to improve their emotional well-being and quality of life.
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
My first step down the path to becoming a therapist began when I was a child. I remember thinking, while talking to a friend about some issues they were having, “I wish talking to people about their problems was a profession.” As I got older and entered college, my grandfather became seriously ill with Alzheimer’s disease. When he was on hospice, I watched the social worker ask various questions and delve into topics I never would have considered for my grandfather’s care. This experience started me on the path to becoming a social worker.
From there, I worked in nursing homes as a social worker and then went on to earn my master’s degree. This opened a new doorway for me to complete an internship at a transplant institute. Immediately after graduation, I accepted a position as a transplant social worker.
In every position I’ve held, there has been one common theme: the best part of the job was when I had time to talk to my clients one-on-one. Listening to people, helping them recognize the strengths they already possess, and supporting them in developing new strengths is something I have spent most of my life working toward. The power of truly hearing someone and being able to reflect back to them that they have been heard is one of the greatest joys of my life. I want my clients to know they are not alone and that there is a path to help guide them through the trials and tribulations of life.
This is my inspiration for becoming a therapist.
