What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I started going to my own therapy when I was 16 and quickly realized how impactful it is. I wouldn't be the person I am today without those sessions and those therapists. Not only does it provide a completely safe space to process and reflect on what's going on in my life, but it grants me opportunities for growth and self-improvement that doesn't come organically. I truly believe that being a counselor is the best way to change the world -- not on a huge systemic level, but with one person, one hour at a time.
If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?
"The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig changed the way I see my life. The novel follows a young woman who is severely depressed. In the Midnight Library, she is able to try on all the different lives she could have lived. Through the experience, she learns what makes life worthwhile and the source of true contentment. Written by a man who struggles with depression himself, "The Midnight Library" is a powerful look into redefining what makes life fulfilling.
