Get To Know Me
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
I wish I could say therapy and healing is an easy process but unfortunately I cannot. Therapy is not like going to the doctor's office and getting a prescription to fix the problem; It’s more like going to a personal trainer. It’s hard work, but the more effort you put into it the better results you get out of it. Sit ups suck but how else are you going to see those abs!
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
There are two distant moments I realized I wanted to be a marriage and family therapist. The first time was when I was working in a daycare in my teens and noticed first hand the difference in emotional regulation in children with a supportive family system versus a struggling family system. The second was when I was kicked out of my home when I was 17 after coming out to my parents, my support systems and therapist were crucial to me durning this time period. This made me realize the significance of relationships for one’s healing which cemented my career path further.
If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?
Lars and the real girl starring Ryan Gosling influenced my therapy approach by incorporating the family system to be involved emotionally and physically with the struggling individual. I believe it takes a village to help heal one individual.
