In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?

I like to approach developing insight, creating change in behaviors, and finding solutions from a place of being curious, with openness to the idea that it can be trial and error as we find what works for you, and with an understanding that it would be arrogant to tell you how to live your life or from a place that I might know you better or your experience better than you know yourself. Prior to getting training in dialectical behavior therapy and radically open dialectical behavior therapy I fancied myself as oriented more in the humanistic existential school of thought, with particular interest in Gestalt psychotherapy. As an lifelong creative person and with a love of learning, its very likely that I will encourage you to expand your perspective, try out things that stimulate creativity/expression, and you may very well hear me talk about using skills that involve creative practices. This does not mean you need to be artistic to work with me.

What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

I come from a family that has many "helpers" in it so helping others was a very natural path for me. As a result of experiences growing up including getting help, it became very clear to me that I wanted to help others by listening to them, providing them feedback, collaborating on identifying solutions, and teaching skillfulness.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

We should be working on your goals in therapy. There will be things that are non-negotiable for us to work on together. These are going to be safety concerns/issues and issues that get in the way of treatment being successful. Other than those two areas, I am very clear that your time in therapy is about your life and what makes sense for you.

Work History

I have worked in a variety of care settings including residential, partial hospitalization, intensive out patient, out patient, school based, and community settings. It has been important to me to get a variety of experiences so that I can better understand the experiences of my clients when they have received different levels of care and so that I can better provide support/care to those transitioning out of a higher level of care into an out patient setting. I have worked in interdisciplinary teams and understand the value of having providers connected to each other (ex: communication between a therapist, psychiatrist, ancillary therapist, coach, etc).
