In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?
Over the past two decades, I have learned two lessons very well. First, I do not know it all. I came out of graduate school hot. I thought I knew all the answers and had all the solutions. I remember sitting at my desk on the very first day of my first "real job" and reading the first file. That was June 1999 and I still remember her name. I did not have the answers for that little girl. It turned out a whole community would have to work together for years to get her into a safe situation.
The second lesson I learned was that is that people need compassion. I suppose I thought everyone had a compassionate ear in their mother because that is what I had. I learned quickly that many do not have that. I try my best to be a compassionate ear. I will not sugarcoat the truth, but I will share the truth with compassion.
