How do you determine therapy goals with clients? What does that process look like?
Setting therapy goals is a deeply collaborative process; we figure them out together. You are the expert on your own life, so we start by having an open conversation about what brought you in, where you feel stuck, and what you want your life to feel like instead.
From there, we map out a path that honors all parts of who you are. Depending on what resonates with you, our process might include taking a spiritual approach to explore your broader sense of meaning, purpose, and connection. We will also likely do some "inner child" work, which means gently exploring and healing old wounds that might be unknowingly driving your reactions today.
But we don’t just stay in the past! The whole point of gaining those deep insights is to create tangible change in your present. Together, we will actively work on building new, favorable patterns and healthy habits that support the life you actually want to live. Ultimately, goal-setting looks like teaming up to define what true healing means for you, and then creating a supportive space to make it happen.

Work HistoryWhen I look back at my career, every step has been about learning to support people when they are feeling at their most vulnerable. Before opening my private practice, Psychotherapy by Dr. Azzam, PLLC, I spent over a decade working in intensive, high-stakes environments that taught me how to be a steady, grounding presence when life feels completely overwhelming. Early in my career, I worked as a Child Protective Services Investigator, followed by several years in various clinical roles at The Menninger Clinic. Working in those settings gave me a deep understanding of complex family dynamics and how early experiences and attachments shape our mental health and sense of self. I learned very quickly how to sit with people through their darkest moments, which means that nothing you bring into our sessions will ever overwhelm me. As I completed my Ph.D. and continued my clinical training, I spent a significant amount of time working within the forensic and legal systems, including conducting court evaluations at The Harris Center and UT Health. Sitting with individuals navigating the justice system honed my ability to see the profound resilience in people who have survived unimaginable stress and trauma. I also completed a post-doctoral fellowship where I focused deeply on treating complex trauma and helping clients navigate severe anxiety. Today, all of those experiences shape the work I do in my private practice. Whether you are dealing with past trauma, feeling paralyzed by anxiety, or just trying to navigate the heavy demands of life, I draw on my years of clinical experience to help us look beneath the surface. My background has given me the tools to help you understand the root of your pain, rather than just putting a band-aid on your symptoms, so we can work toward genuine healing and self-empowerment.
