Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
It was a gradual one. My college path started by attending music school. After realizing I didn't want to become a high school band teacher, my sister told me about Music Therapy. I really liked the idea of being able to help others so checked more into it. At the time I was doing this there were wide hospital cuts, and my sister told me that the first programs being cut were the music therapy ones. I held onto the idea of helping others and decided to take a psychology class and a social work class to see which one I liked better. The psychology class had a strong focus on science, but the social work class combined not only the science piece but also the role of the social and human experience. I have always been fascinated by society, so for me from that point on Social Work was my major.
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
Oddly enough when looking in any type of astrology books on career paths that would suit my date of birth, counseling always is listed. I think some of the main traits that help me as a therapist is being a a good listener, empathetic, non-judgmental, genuine, compassionate, and truly caring about others.

Work HistoryMy career in the mental health field started in 1996 when I did my first internship at a Mental Health Institute in Iowa. Following that I worked as a telephone crisis counselor as well as a youth counselor before relocated to Tennessee for graduate school While in grad school I worked at a residential facility for patients with schizophrenia, interned at a local hospital on the psychiatric unit, and interned in an outpatient mental health facility. Upon graduation I moved to the Atlanta, GA area and worked in a variety of mental health settings and with different populations. These included working with adults and seniors in psychiatric hospital settings, partial hospitalization programs, outpatient mental health, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. I relocated to California about four years ago and have enjoyed continuing to work with adults and seniors.
