Education
University of Indianapolis, Interprofessional Studies and Aging , 2022 — I have a Doctor of Health Sciences(DHSc) with a focus on healthy aging. My research dissertation focused on a qualitative study of older African American women living with depression. The impact of culture, stigma, and religion was examined, and recommendations for effective treatment methods for mental health clinicians were established.
University of Illinois at Chicago , Master of Social Work, Social Work , 1995 — My courses focused on family systems theory, human behavior in the social environment, adult mental health, and substance abuse. Management and policy classes prepared me to become an advocate for social justice and community organizing to create systemic changes
Work HistoryI began my career working in a residential treatment setting for women and their children. As the children's director, I worked closely with the mothers on parenting skills as they recovered from years of addiction and abuse . I have always been an advocate for women's empowerment and continued my work in behavioral health settings with adults suffering from mental health issues and survivors of domestic violence. My experience as a case manager, therapist, and administrator allowed me to assist families in making sustainable changes to improve their lives. My experiences led me to continue my work as a therapist to advocate for healthy aging and assist my older adult clients in leading a healthy and fulfilling life
