Get To Know Me
In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?
As a 1st generation American, my first language was Spanish and thus, my cultural and family identity is heavily rooted in Colombia. This has been helpful in connecting and emphasizing with clients whose English is not their only language and America not their only cultural influence.
Were there lessons in your professional or academic career that left an impression on you, and how has that informed your work today?
The reason I chose to pursue social work is rooted in the focus of not only on a person's symptoms but their experiences and environment as well. This notion of looking at a person as a whole was confirmed and reinforced when I took a course called Human Behavior in the Social Environment.
Is there any research-based work you’ve done that you found particularly exciting, and how has that informed your practice today?
I worked in a research lab during my time at FSU in the Technology and Psychopathology Lab along Dr. Joseph Franklin working on several projects involving Machine Learning, experimenting with Virtual Reality and other Technology to explore new treatment methods for different mental health struggles, meta-analyses of current data, and identifying physiological differences (potential biomarkers) for suicidality. Being exposed to current research data has contributed to my professional knowledge, expertise and skills I utilize in therapy with clients.
