Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I started Eden Psychotherapy after becoming disillusioned with the "medical model" of therapy and many of the formal practices associated with clinical mental health. Working in the field in outpatient practices, hospitals, shelters, and rehab centers, I had heard all too often from clients that the support they were receiving was merely prescriptive. Too many were feeling unseen and unheard. The story seemed to go, "My therapist just nodded most of the time and asked how I felt about this or that—it was helpful sometimes I guess.. (he/she/they) were nice, but they just never asked me to go deeper." My frustration at the failure on the part of these therapists would eventually fuel my desire to begin employing evidenced-based approaches that were dynamic enough to support and connect with individuals in more meaningful ways, ways that would eventually evolve into my current method of practice today.
In what ways do your life philosophy and treatment philosophy overlap?
Service is one of my primary core values, which is not only reflected through my chosen profession and how I use my time but also a value I try to embody. Service bridges the gap between the attention and support I give myself and the time and attention I give to others.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
As an integrative therapist, I use several modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), gestalt, motivational interviewing, internal family systems (IFS), behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and solution-focused brief therapy. These are just a few of the modalities and approaches that assist me in best supporting a vastly diverse client population. As a psychodynamic therapist, I support clients in addressing the issues that bring them to therapy primarily within the context of their family of origin, formative attachment, and relationships. Psychodynamic work primarily seeks to uncover underlying motivations and dynamics present in an individual's life as they relate to family of origin and formative attachments.
