What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
My journey to becoming a Psychotherapist and Doctor of Psychology is largely based on many turns, ups and downs in life that included two unexpected trauma events. What I learned along the way is that 'stuff' happens in life, and it is how you deal with it all that really manners. In November 2011, I saw the motion picture "Seven Days in Utopia" and that helped me to see my purpose in life. In January 2012, I began my Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree program specializing in sport and performance psychology, graduating in February 2016. For the next seven years I offered performance psychology coaching to athletes and non-athletes seeking to improve on personal performance. However, my PsyD is not a clinical degree so I was significantly limited on what I could help my clients with involving mental health issues. In 2022 I made the decision to change that, and pursed my MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, graduating in 2024. In August 2024, I became a Board-Certified Counselor (NCC), and in September 2025 I became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). In my lifetime, I have faced death twice, experienced success and failure becoming aware that positive thought creates positive behavior, where gratitude, understanding of what we can and cannot control, accepting what we can and cannot control and finding purpose to life is essential for productive mental wellbeing for positive daily living.
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
My patients call me Dr Sandy. I offer a supportive teletherapy space to process what you’re going through and build practical tools for productive mental wellbeing for positive daily living on Saturday mornings at the present time. If you have had difficulty connecting with a psychotherapist providing mental health counseling in the past don't give-up. I understand your world, and look forward to helping you move forward in a positive manner with clarity and confidence. My integrated psychotherapy approach works, and it will work for you. Work HistoryI am a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Board-Certified Counselor (NCC), and specialize in working with adults aged 18 to 100 years, experiencing trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, depression, have difficulty meeting expectations and or performance objectives, experience low self-confidence/low self-esteem, or are facing life pressures. My theoretical orientation is behavioral psychology that involves evidence-based cognitive therapies supported by the integration of performance psychology mental resiliency skills for therapeutic coping and recovery. I apply an integrated approach to psychotherapy focused on how thinking affects behavior, and how replacing negative thoughts and emotions with positive thoughts and emotions creates a ‘new normal’ for productive mental wellbeing and positive daily living. My passion lies in supporting US veterans, first responders, athletes and those in high performance occupations. I also deeply connect with those facing significant life issues and crises. If you identify with these groups and are seeking compassionate, expert guidance to navigate life's challenges, my psychotherapy works, and it will work for you.
