Education
Hofstra University, Doctorate of Philosophy, Clinical/ School Psychology, 1981 — I have earned two master's degrees in psychology and a Ph.D. in professional psychology with a dual specialization in clinical and school psychology. I am both a certified school psychologist and a licensed psychologist in New York State. I also have earned the Board Certified–TeleMental Health Provider (BC-TMH) credential through the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE). I have been producing podcasts and videocasts for years. You can find my productions at podomatic.com—The Shrink Is In—or on iTunes at The Shrink Is In. For 7 years (2010-2014, 2017, and 2019), the readers of the Long Island Press nominated Dr. Gurr for “Best Psychotherapist" on Long Island. Dr. Gurr won first place in 2010 and was the second-place winner in 2012. Dr. Gurr also received the Doctors' Choice Award for the best psychologist in Dix Hills in 2018 and the silver award for most votes from doctors. I have been using virtual reality therapy in my practice for over 10 years, and I am one of the few therapists who utilize it remotely to help patients resolve phobias and anxieties. I am a co-founder of the Society for Immersive Mental Health and the creator of the International Directory of Virtual Reality Therapists.
Work HistoryI have worked as a school psychologist for over 33 years in school districts on Long Island. Simultaneously, I maintained a private practice, assisting children and adults grappling with anxieties and phobias. I also consult with companies from all over the world that develop treatment platforms for virtual reality therapy and mental health. I present to professional groups about the use of virtual reality for the treatment of mental health problems, and I assist other therapists in developing their skills in this area and fostering their own practices.
