If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
Seeing a therapist doesn't mean that you've somehow failed at life or being able to handle your own problems. We all have hard times where we feel stuck and aren't sure what to do, and many people reach out to others to help them cope. At times like this, therapy can be a good place to talk with someone who knows how to help. Therapy is also a place where people can learn ways to be happy and build on what's going well, assisting them to live a good life even when things are difficult.
Is there any research-based work you’ve done that you found particularly exciting, and how has that informed your practice today?
I've done a lot of research on personal growth initiative, which is a skill set of thoughts and behaviors people can actively use when making positive personal changes in their lives. Personal growth initiative has been related to many things, such as lower anxiety and depression and higher well-being. It can be learned in therapy, and it can also help the therapy process when people are high in this skill set. My research on personal growth initiative has helped me better understand skills clients can use to engage in positive life changes.

Education
Texas Tech University, Doctorate of Philosophy, Counseling Psychology, 2007
Work HistoryI've been a licensed psychologist in Ohio for over 10 years, and I also have over 16 years of experience training people to become therapists. I've developed expertise working with life transitions and related issues with which many people struggle, such as stress, anxiety, and grief. I also have specialized knowledge in positive psychology, which includes how people become happy and live life to their full potential. As a psychologist, I provide a safe, collaborative space where I work with clients to understand what’s happening and learn ways to cope. I also help clients apply their strengths, find meaning, and engage in other aspects of personal growth. As a counseling psychologist specifically, I personalize therapy to each of my clients using a holistic approach. This means I take into account many different things, such as a client's specific situation, environment, and who they are as a person. I do this collaboratively with my clients, as they are the experts on their own lives.
