Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I was inspired to become a therapist after being put into therapy as a teen. Though reluctant at first, I was changed and inspired by the process. I think this is why I often can connect well with children and teens who begin therapy with reluctance or hesitation.
In what ways do your life philosophy and treatment philosophy overlap?
In life, I try to find acceptance even in challenging circumstances while also taking action to move toward what is important for me and those I love. I think it is that way of being that has drawn me to acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). ACT is an extension of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and focuses on accepting thoughts and feelings (often through mindfulness) and committing to taking steps to create a life that is in line with your values. I am not rigidly tied to any one treatment model or perspective, but I really appreciate what ACT brings to the table.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
As a therapist, I am very flexible. Some people want a therapist who can often provide feedback and activities. Others want a therapist who provides an environment for healing and growth while the person in therapy takes charge. Overall, I am very open to feedback and try to adapt to what the person in therapy seeks to get out of therapy.
