What does success look like in therapy? How will a client know that they are making progress?
In my approach, success in therapy means that a client begins to feel more grounded, self-aware, and in control of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Through evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), clients learn to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, build coping skills, and replace self-defeating behaviors with more effective ones. For trauma survivors, success may also involve feeling safer in their bodies, developing trust in relationships, and reducing emotional reactivity. Clients often recognize progress when they respond differently to old triggers, experience fewer distressing symptoms, set boundaries more confidently, and make values-based decisions. Even small shifts in how a client thinks, feels, or acts in everyday life are meaningful signs that healing is taking place.
