If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?

Definitely "The Field of Dreams" because we cannot cross that proverbial bridge until we have our foot on it. This movie teaches us to trust in our dreams and follow the path life is showing us.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

"I believe that each individual has both a unique set of gifts and a world view shaped by past experiences and present circumstances. I also believe that in order to know where we are going, we need to realize how we arrived where we are in our present environment." Through sessions together, I will collaborate with you to assist you in recognizing your individual strengths and strive to empower you with the self-awareness and self-confidence to pursue your dreams. I take a person-centered, creative, non-judgmental approach to counseling, believing that each person's experiences have shaded a uniquely colored set of lenses through which each sees the world. Let's explore your self-perceptions and world view to help you realize your dreams. I have vast experience supporting clients strugging with anxiety, PTSD, substance dependence, unresolved grief, women's issues, family and relationship issues, and depression and I have unique skills such as art therapy and A-B-C relaxation and meditation training in my counseling toolbox to help you succeed in attaining your goals! I am an A-B-C Relaxation and Meditation Trainer, as conferred by Roosevelt University. This Attentional-Beavioral-Cognitive method is an evidence-based means of teaching several techniques for clients to learn coping skills for anxiety, PTSD, and depression. Additionally, I interned at a hospice as a bereavement counseslor and have much to offer clients in helping them to resolve their grief. I have worked with many women experiencing life stage transitions and welcome them to my practice. My clients have often told me that they can feel that I truly care about them as people -- and I do! I draw from myriad theoretical orientations from Gestalt and Jungian to Cognitive Behavioral and work according to client response specificity -- meaning I meet clients where they are and use interventions best suited to their personalities and level of understanding.

What would be important for someone to know about working with you?

I take a very non-judgmental approach to therapy. While I might not personally agree with decisions you have made in your life, I will always validate your feelings, realizing your choices are your own, is your individual life path.

Education

Roosevelt University, Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Community Counseling, 2010

CACREP-accredited graduate program with intense coursework in all 8 core areas of study.

Roosevelt University, Bachelor of Arts, Psychology / Fine Arts Minor, with Honors, 2007

Fine Arts coursework largely comprised of Art Therapy coursework completed at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, under a reciprocal agreement with Roosevelt University.

Roosevelt University, Associate of Applied Arts, A-B-C Relaxation and Meditation Trainer Certificate (not AAA), 2005

This is an evidence-based relaxation and meditation program which resulted from an international study including over 10,000 participants and was found to significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression as well as to enhance well-being and self-esteem.

Work History

As an A-B-C (evidence-based) Relaxation and Meditation Trainer, I am uniquely qualified to support you in managing your symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to overcome the triggers of post-traumatic stress disorder. I interned at the Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois as a bereavement counselor, so I am also quite adept at assisting clients in resolving their grief -- both simple and complex. This internship experience was quite valuable as life is made up, in large part, of losses -- both "big" (death / divorce) and "little" (everyday disappointments) losses. Please allow me to support you in your journey to heal from your losses. I worked for 3.5 years as a substance dependence therapist, supporting persons dependent upon opioids. I was employed as an Assertive Community Treatment Team Lead, with a staff of nine mental health and medical professionals serving our client base of 85. This treatment program is defined as "a hospital without walls," and is for severely mentally ill people, many with dual diagnoses. Many years of my professional practice was spect as an Intensive In-Home Team Lead, supervising a staff of 2 mental health professionals and providing direct care in clients' homes.
