Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I come from a family with mental health and substance abuse issues, which drove me to want to help others in similar situations and with mental health concerns. I completed my master's in professional counseling and went on to work in settings including youth shelters, substance abuse rehab, psychiatric hospitals, teaching, and managed care insurance. I hold a certification in substance abuse treatment and am an adult child of an alcoholic. I have a trauma-informed, BIPOC-welcoming, LGBTQIA+-accepting, and diversity-inclusive practice. I am very open, welcoming, and understanding; I recognize the need for person-centered treatment, as everyone is an individual with their own unique path in life. I have an eclectic approach to therapy and have completed training in mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and trauma.
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
I believe that you should feel comfortable talking to your therapist in order to make progress. I spend the first session getting to know your history in order to provide better support and assistance. I tend to send out podcasts and articles to encourage you to work on yourself outside of the therapy session. I believe that my role in the process is to listen to where you are, identify connections and concerns, and offer suggestions on things that may help you achieve your goals and get to a place where you are functioning in a manner that is more healthy and productive. Homework tends to be something you come up with yourself based on your needs. I work primarily with adults, ages 18-50 years old. I have had a lot of success working with people with LGBTQIA+ lifestyles, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, substance abuse concerns, trauma histories, and dysfunctional family systems.
In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?
My core values include honesty, open-mindedness, compassion, kindness, creativity, fairness, and accountability. I believe in meeting you where you are and encouraging growth based on your needs and values. I encourage working on basic needs, such as sleep, nutrition, activity, social connections, and community involvement, to have a good foundation from which to work on mental health issues. I have a welcoming practice that invites people from all sorts of lifestyles to feel safe and supported in their exploration of their beliefs and growth processes. I believe that growth can be found by finding out what works for an individual and encouraging that growth. Overcoming our negative biases tends to be a theme in my practice, as I have found that many people struggle to find that joy they may have seen in their childhoods as they go through life transitions.
