Get To Know Me
In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?
I believe that my personal experiences have given me the ability to understand and be empathetic to the many things that a person might bring to therapy. While my experiences are not the same, there are inevitably overlaps in the feelings, the paths taken (with success and failure), the frustrations and joys of finding our way through life's ups and downs.
In what ways do your life philosophy and treatment philosophy overlap?
I am a glass half full girl. I don't know how to be anything else. If we can see our cups filling up - and that there are ways we can change thinking or actions to help fill our cups - we can move one step at a time in that direction. While I understand not everyone comes to therapy feeling this way, I think it's important to help folks find the good, find the people and things that help fill them up, and find the resiliency within themselves.
I also find the idea of the serenity prayer to be comforting and grounding when I'm in my head and feels. And I bring those ideas to therapy. How can we find the strength? How can we find the courage? And how do we know the difference between what a situation needs from us?
And lastly, I believe wholeheartedly that we must 'put our oxygen masks on first', because if we're not good, we can't do good for others that we love and care for.
What do you view as a key component of the therapeutic relationship?
Authenticity - I can't show up as anyone but myself and as the same of my clients.
Empathy - I will sit with you in the best and worst of times and try and help you make sense of it.
Unconditional positive regard - I will be with you, support you and accepting you, just as you are.
