Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I'm Joshua Roybal, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Army veteran based in New Mexico. I started Mindful Point Behavioral Health Counseling because I know firsthand that trauma doesn't announce itself — it shows up in sleep, in relationships, in the way you move through the world. And I know that asking for help takes real courage.
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
I specialize in evidence-based trauma treatment for veterans, active duty service members, first responders, and anyone carrying the weight of difficult experiences. My approach draws on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Written Exposure Therapy, and Image Rehearsal Therapy for trauma-related nightmares — all structured, research-backed methods designed to actually move the needle, not just manage symptoms.
If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?
The Body Keeps the Score — written by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a Dutch-born psychiatrist and trauma researcher based in Boston. Published in 2014. It's a valuable psychoeducation for clients and useful for understanding the somatic dimension of trauma.

Professional Background
LicensureNew Mexico, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, SWB-2022-0980
Work HistoryMy work is rooted in trauma-focused, evidence-based modalities. I use EMDR to help clients reprocess distressing memories that feel stuck, Written Exposure Therapy (WET) for structured trauma narrative work, and Image Rehearsal Therapy (IRT) specifically for trauma-related nightmares — a common and often overlooked symptom in trauma survivors, veterans and first responders.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) serves as an adjunct throughout — helping clients develop psychological flexibility, clarify what matters to them, and move toward a life aligned with their values even while difficult emotions are present.
I believe therapy should be purposeful and measurable. You'll always know what we're working toward and why.
