How has your particular field of specialization evolved in recent years and how has that impacted your work?
Previously, trauma-focused therapy assumed that clients needed to verbalize and process the traumatic events. We now understand clearly that the old approach can result in retraumatization of the person. Current trauma-focused therapy focuses on the individual's present-moment experience and asks, "What do you need to feel safe now?" I also help the client explore survival strategies (coping skills) that may have helped them through the traumatic events and are no longer effective or needed to survive and thrive.
