Work HistoryI have extensive experience working in residential treatment centers, where I got to experience folks' struggles and share space with them outside of the therapy office. I facilitated tens of groups on DBT skills and stress management techniques, using art and creative writing to amplify nonverbal communication, and helping folks navigate the stages of change as they pertain to substance use and life’s changes. My experiences in these spaces, and seeing the poor quality of treatment and care BIPOC and queer clients received, strengthened my understanding of how important it is to have competent, properly trained, therapists dedicated to social justice and to community. From my experience as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have developed a keen understanding of intergenerational trauma. Those of us with marginalized or underserved identities experience unique triggers that can manifest as a myriad of different symptoms; our issues are compounded by systemic racism, stolen land, loss of languages and cultural practices, need for reparations, stories of the wrongs done to our ancestors, and more.
