What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
Before becoming a therapist I worked as a professional musician and in arts administration. I know burnout very well first hand as well as the challenges of navigating a job that is also a hobby and a lifestyle! I also worked in college settings for several years where I helped non-traditional students find the support needed to be successful academically. This work led me to be interested in the root causes of issues in school which brought me to being a counselor. I feel so lucky to do this work and privileged that people share their stories with me.
What do you think is the biggest barrier today for people seeking care?
In my experience one of the biggest barriers to care is money. I try to accommodate this with insurance and accepting Health Savings Accounts as payment options. I also will always work with clients on payment plans so we can move forward in a way that is sustainable. Another barrier I often see is judgement. We come to therapy to talk about things that we often don't talk about with anyone else and it is extremely vulnerable. My number on priority in therapy is for our time together to be judgment free, warm, and accepting. This does not mean you won't be challenged, but it does mean that you can share your life experiences and how they impacted you without fear of me viewing you in a negative light. We are all doing what we can with what we have.
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
My hope is that client will leave sessions with insight into their experiences, behaviors, and relationships. There is so much to learn from discussing past and present experiences and how they have impacted us - our time in therapy will be used to discuss those observations and question why we may have reacted that way. Perhaps we learned it from a guardian or in a past relationship. Maybe we were in a workplace that felt unsafe or experienced a traumatic event many years ago. These are all dots we can connect together during therapy in a non-judgmental place. You are the author of your own story and the expert on your experience. I am here to reflect, question, and explore with my clients.

Professional Background
Licensure
Under Supervision: Katherine Cooley, Licensed Professional Counselor, 6339 is practicing under the supervision of Charmayne Adams (Nebraska, LIMHP, 2213) at Focus Therapy.
Please, note: A clinician listed as being “clinically supervised” is completing clinical hours toward their licensure. They have one or more fully licensed clinical supervisors that often have special training. They consult with their supervisor(s) on all of their cases.
Work HistoryI have 3 years of experience as an individual counselor. I have worked in community oriented settings as well as on a college campus supporting students. I currently work in private practice which allows me the freedom to work with clients I know I can really help. I have extra training in LGBTQIA+ populations and experience working with this population in therapy. I also see other mental health care professionals, folks experiencing grief or loss, and operate from a Health At Every Size (HAES) approach.
