Under Clinical Supervision

Katie Bennett, Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate, LPCC.0021577 is practicing under the supervision of Shannon Matlock (Colorado, LPC, LPC.0017231) at Rivercrest Wellness.

Please, note: A clinician listed as being “clinically supervised” is completing clinical hours toward their licensure. They have one or more fully licensed clinical supervisors that often have special training to become supervisors. They consult with their supervisor(s) on all of their cases, which means that, when working with them, you are getting the time and expertise of multiple therapists in your treatment.

What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

After nearly a decade in the high-stress world of management consulting, working with executives across the Fortune 500 on high-profile strategy and execution work, I had become dear friends with anxiety, burnout and perfectionism. While I was successful in that space, I was constantly exhausted, with no energy left to try and figure out what was wrong. Healing from that took an incredible amount of time, energy and effort - but it was incredibly rewarding to feel like myself again. Inspired that I could help others with similar challenges, I earned a Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the College of William & Mary to fulfill that goal and eventually establish Rivercrest Wellness. (I’m so glad you’re here!)

What is your style/approach to therapy?

As a therapist, I operate from an eclectic, person-centered and strengths-based counseling approach. What that means is I use many tools and theoretical approaches to help you heal - while highlighting the things about you that are already wonderful. In session, you’ll find a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, Gottman-based techniques, and somatic processing. I also love incorporating mindfulness and humor into my work with clients. It’s my pleasure to work with adults, couples and young adults from all walks of life improving their opportunities to thrive.

Work History

My professional path as a therapist has included a diverse array of experience. I started with several years of crisis work via Crisis Text Line - a anonymous hotline for people in crisis and at risk of self-harm. I was then fortunate to work at an addiction recovery center, in the intensive outpatient program seeing clients for over 20 hours a week. I had the opportunity to support both groups and individuals through the trials of substance abuse and knew that I had found a home in counseling. From there, I pivoted to private practice for more general adult experience where I had an opportunity to refine my skillset further in treating anxiety, depression, anger management, relationship issues and eating disorders from a diverse theoretical application. Most recently, I moved to a team that specializes in peak performance with executives, athletes, and people that want to realize their full potential.
