Get To Know Me
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I tend to be direct, warm, and genuinely curious about people — and all three of those qualities show up in how I work. I'm not the kind of therapist who sits quietly and nods. I engage. I ask questions that might catch you off guard a little, because I've found that's often where the most honest and useful material lives.
I also bring a fair amount of optimism into the room — not the shallow kind that glosses over real pain, but a hard-won belief, built over decades of watching people change, that healing is genuinely possible for almost anyone willing to do the work. That belief tends to be contagious, and I think it matters.
I have a strong systems-thinking mind, which means I'm always looking at the bigger picture — how your patterns connect, where they came from, and what's actually driving them beneath the surface. But I balance that with a lot of care for the person sitting in front of me. You're not a case to be figured out. You're a human being with a story, and I take that seriously.
I'm also someone who has lived through significant personal challenges, and I don't pretend otherwise. I won't share my story in ways that make the session about me, but I do bring an authenticity to this work that comes from knowing what it feels like to be in a hard place and find your way through.

Work History**My Path to This Work**
My journey into counseling didn't begin in a classroom — it was forged through more than two decades of working alongside people in the hardest seasons of their lives. That real-world experience is the foundation of everything I bring into the therapy room today.
**Where My Expertise Was Built**
My deepest roots are in addiction recovery. Beginning in the early 2000s, I spent nearly twenty years developing, directing, and running residential treatment and detox programs in Southern Utah. At The Bridge Recovery Center and later at The Retreat at Zion and the IBH Detox Center, I worked directly with individuals and families navigating substance use, co-occurring mental health challenges, and the physical toll that addiction takes on the whole person. I wasn't just managing programs from a distance — I was in the work, building the curriculum, sitting in groups, and learning what actually helps people change from the inside out.
Over that time, I developed a deep respect for the complexity of recovery. It's rarely just about the substance. It almost always involves trauma, identity, relationships, and a person's sense of meaning and purpose. That's what drew me to an integrative approach — one that addresses the mind, heart, body, and spirit together rather than treating symptoms in isolation.
**Working with Young People and Behavioral Health**
I also spent several years working with adolescents in residential behavioral health settings, including at Provo Canyon School (Universal Health Systems) and Cinnamon Hills Youth Crisis Center. This work deepened my understanding of how early experiences — and unmet developmental needs — shape the patterns people carry into adulthood. Working in those milieu environments taught me a great deal about what it takes to help someone feel safe enough to actually begin changing.
**The Coaching and Human Development Years**
Alongside the clinical work, I spent many years in coaching, training, and human development — both through my own company, VisionLogic, and in partnership with other organizations. I worked with business professionals, executives, and individuals on everything from leadership and self-regulation to relationships and life direction. This work sharpened my understanding of how people get stuck, what it takes to shift long-standing patterns, and how to help someone reconnect with what they actually want their life to look like.
**Training That Shaped My Approach**
During this season, I earned my certification in clinical hypnotherapy through the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, trained extensively in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and pursued certifications in DBT, motivational interviewing, Reiki, and several somatic and mind-body approaches. These tools became central to how I work — particularly the understanding that lasting change often has to happen below the surface, at the level of the beliefs and subconscious patterns that drive behavior.
**Coming Full Circle into Therapy**
All of that experience led me back to school to formalize what I had been doing intuitively for years. I completed my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in trauma, and I now practice as an Associate MFT at Ascend Counseling & Wellness in St. George, Utah. My wife Tina is also a therapist, and we share a deep commitment to this work as a calling, not just a career.
What I bring to every client is the breadth of someone who has worked in the trenches of behavioral health for a long time — and the heart of someone who has seen, over and over again, that people are more capable of change than they often believe.
