How do you determine therapy goals with clients? What does that process look like?

I am interested in helping you know yourself on a deeper level. Sometimes we get stuck in life, because, without even knowing why, we get into conflict with ourselves about who are, who we're supposed to be, and who deeply wish we were. Some of us have been taught that we are an extension of other people's needs, values, wishes and wants and some of us have never really learned who we are in deeper, more essential ways. If we're out of synch, life can feel anxiety-inducing, dispiriting and difficult. Our task is to get back to something essential inside, learn to listen to it, and learn to help it grow.

What does success look like in therapy? How will a client know that they are making progress?

Success looks like having the capacity to live with ourselves comfortably. Success looks like being able to handle any emotion that comes our way. Success looks like resilience- knowing that we can regulate our emotions and that we can trust them, not to take us over, but to guide us to helpful thoughts and actions. Success looks like having the capacity to be in intimate relationship with ourselves and others. Success looks like being able to choose a life path this is generative and give us a sense of purpose. Success looks like accepting ourselves for who we are and accepting the realities of our past -reckoning with disappointments and loss and coming to terms with reality in ways that allow us to understand the past in both their positive and difficult aspects.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I am a spacious listener. I believe that our job is to allow aspects of ourselves that we don't quite know yet to surface. I won't leave you hanging out there, alone in the spaciousness, however! I'm interested in collaborative dialogue, in conversation, and in meaning making. The process of therapy is challenging, at times, but it is also fundamentally creative, and an be fun (believe it or not!) and filled with surprising insights. I believe that the foundation for good therapy is a trusting relationship. So much depends on the fit- whether you feel compatible, comfortable, safe, and able to open up with the therapist you choose. I hope you spend time finding the right fit for you, and I look forward to hearing from you about what it is you are looking for in a therapist and what you want to grow in your life!

Education

California Institute of Integral Studies, Master of Arts, Psychotherapy, 2004

I am a trained and licensed psychotherapist with 20 years of experience. I work as a clinician as well a clinical supervisor and, sometimes, I am also an adjunct graduate school professor. I have over 15 years of experience working psychoanalytically, I am trained in working with trauma, particularly using a technique called E.M.D.R. (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and I also have training working with body awareness and mindfulness. What this adds up to is a therapy that blends both a deep understanding of psychological functioning, as well as, an understanding of the emotions and how those emotions live and get processed through the body.
