Get To Know Me
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
When I'm not with clients or managing the practice, I can often be found adventuring outdoors with my awesome kiddo or at home playing with our retired therapy dog, Koda, and our spunky gremlin kitty, Elvis. We especially love kayaking, hiking, climbing, biking, rollerblading, and visiting the local metroparks. I'm also into gardening, reading, yoga, TV and movies, and home improvement projects. As you can see, I bring my hobbies to work, and vice versa. I am a survivor of trauma and have intimate understanding of the pain as well as possible paths to healing. These activities and time with these individuals have been therapeutic and have provided me with coping strategies and external resources, and many of them exist under the "EcoTherapy" umbrella. I've also experienced EMDR in the context of my own therapy and can attest to its effectiveness!
What does a first session with you look like?
The first session with me usually is just us getting to know each other and going over the answers you provided on your intake questionnaires and assessments. We'll discuss important topics like the limits of confidentiality, scheduling, the insurance process, the cancellation policy, etc. Then you'll have the opportunity to share what inspired you to find support. I am a new person in your life, so I don't expect clients to open up completely during the intake session unless that's what they want to do. It's my job to create a safe environment and build a trusting relationship because I firmly believe that healing happens within healthy and supportive relationships.
What’s the most profound, insightful, or interesting thing you’ve learned as a mental health professional?
My clients teach me things all the time, and it keeps me curious and humble. My approach is client-centered which means the power in the room is shared. It's a relief to not have to have all the answers! One thing I've noticed over the years is how to mitigate and/or eliminate my own biases and approach every session with "beginner's mind" - a non-judgemental mindset that allows me to be as present and compassionate as possible.
