If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?
"Psychotherapy Isn't What You Think" by James Bugental is one of the books that has most deeply impacted my approach to therapy. Early in my career, I had the opportunity to train under James Bugental, who was one of the founders of humanistic and existential-humanistic therapy. He was a master at developing healing relationships with clients. This book is the best overview of his approach.
What does success look like in therapy? How will a client know that they are making progress?
Success in therapy is different for different people. It is important to work with clients to determine what outcomes they would like to achieve in therapy. In my 25+ years, I have worked with a wide variety of clients seeking various types of outcomes. In the early portion of therapy, it is important to clarify the client's desired outcome; however, this often changes during the course of therapy. The desired outcome will then influence how a client will know if progress is being made. Progress is not always made in a straight line. As a therapist, I believe it is my responsibility to help people recognize and make sense out of the changes they are making.
Were there lessons in your professional or academic career that left an impression on you, and how has that informed your work today?
Throughout my career, I have been involved with teaching, research, supervision, and offering therapy to clients. Being involved in teaching, research, and supervision has helped me to become a better therapist. It requires that I remain current with the literature and continually sharpen my own skills.

Work HistoryFrom an early age, relationships, compassion, and empathy were important to me. These played an important role in my decision to become a psychologist. However, my education rarely emphasized the importance of relationships in therapy. Toward the end of my graduate career, I discovered a different approach to therapy, called existential-humanistic therapy, that believed that the therapy relationship, self-awareness, and compassion were an important part of the change process for many people. As I began applying these in my approach to therapy, I witnessed deeper, more sustaining changes in the people that I work with in therapy. Now, there is significant research that shows that the therapy relationship accounts for a significant portion of the change that occurs in psychotherapy and counseling.
While I am passionate about helping people through compassionate, empathetic relationships that help people develop more satisfying relationships, meaning, and deeper self-awareness, I am thankful that there are different approaches to psychotherapy and counseling. Different types of therapy work better with different individuals. I believe that people seeking therapy benefit from therapists who help them find the type of therapy that is best for them instead of assuming that one type of therapy is the best for everyone.
