If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?

Irvin Yalom's Existential Psychotherapy is an important influence on my approach to therapy. All of Yalom's books resonate with me and inform my style of therapy which is based on building a solid therapeutic alliance.

What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

I wasn't always a therapist; I am also an artist. Through my artistic creations, I've explored the human condition, drawing inspiration from an existential and humanistic viewpoint. Around twenty-five years ago, I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a systemic and inflammatory form of arthritis that causes stiffness and pain in joints and connective tissues. I managed the disease for quite some time, but about ten years ago, its physical limitations began to impact my art practice and other aspects of my life. Adapting to these changes, I decided to redirect my passion toward psychotherapy. This shift allowed me to reevaluate my goals and priorities, ultimately leading me to assist others in navigating their own challenges.

If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?

We don't see the world as it is. We see the world as we are. A therapist provides a safe, non-judgmental way to investigate our unique perspective and come closer to being aware of the world as it is.

Work History

My recent experience as a therapist includes counseling students at Berea College Counseling Services. Berea students often come from a low-SES environment, and many experienced complex trauma. They were challenging clients, but working with them was gratifying, and I gained significant insight into their issues. They helped me develop my therapeutic approach. But I am also an artist, recognized with two fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and my artwork showcased in many prestigious exhibitions. Through my work as an artist, I've explored the human condition, drawing inspiration from an existential and humanistic viewpoint. In addition, I've been involved in many aspects of the art world: I've taught art at the college level and worked at several galleries and museums. I've also worked as a project manager for a software company.
