Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I actually was a music director for improv and sketch comedy, and by teaching music and songwriting to actors with no musical skill, I saw firsthand the positive effects music has on people. By studying music therapy, I was able to learn the clinical skills required to use music as a tool for change.
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I am a person who is passionate about helping people see their true potential through a lens of kindness and humor. Honestly, my biggest achievement as a person who has anxiety and depression is learning not to take life so seriously. There is so much we cannot control, and instead of trying to change it (which is impossible), I have learned to gently embrace the chaos with laughter and the occasional eye roll. I bring that reality to all of my sessions.
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
You can expect to learn how to use music as a positive tool for change, whether than means creating playlists, discussing lyrics, expression emotions through music-listening, or even songwriting. Psychotherapy does NOT have to be a therapist and client staring at each other in a sterile room. Working with me will open up a whole new perspective on how psychotherapy can change you for the better with the simple addition of music.

Work HistoryMy name is Matthew L. Cohen and I am a board-certified music therapist and licensed creative arts therapist.
I specialize in working with teens and adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or weighed down by depression, low self-esteem, or challenges around identity and recovery.
I help by using music as a therapeutic tool to unlock emotions, build motivation, and create new pathways for healing and growth. You don’t need to be a musician to benefit — just a willingness to listen, reflect, and discover how music can help you connect more deeply with yourself.
