What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

My path to becoming a mental health counselor has been a journey marked by personal experiences, professional growth, and a deep passion for supporting others in their mental health journeys. Reflecting on the various stages that led me here, I realize how each step has contributed to shaping my identity as a compassionate and effective counselor. Initially, my interest in mental health was sparked during my undergraduate studies. I pursued a degree in psychology, fascinated by the complexities of the human mind and behavior. My coursework introduced me to various psychological theories and practices, but it was the hands-on experiences—such as volunteering at local mental health organizations and outreach programs—that truly ignited my passion. Working closely with individuals facing mental health challenges deepened my understanding and empathy, motivating me to take a more active role in the field. After completing my undergraduate degree, I knew I wanted to further my education. I enrolled in a graduate program in counseling psychology, where I immersed myself in intensive coursework and clinical training. This period of my life was transformative, as I not only gained theoretical knowledge but also honed my practical skills through supervised clinical placements. I had the opportunity to work with diverse populations, which enriched my understanding of the various factors contributing to mental health issues and the different approaches needed to address them. During my graduate studies, I was introduced to several therapeutic modalities, and I found myself particularly drawn to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and person-centered approaches. I appreciated how these techniques fostered self-exploration and empowered clients to take an active role in their healing. I engaged deeply in these modalities, participating in workshops and trainings to strengthen my competency and enhance my ability to serve my future clients. Once I obtained my degree, I pursued licensure as a mental health counselor. This entailed completing a designated number of supervised clinical hours and passing a rigorous licensing exam. Although challenging, this process only solidified my commitment to the field and made me eager to begin working with clients. Entering the workforce as a licensed mental health counselor was both exhilarating and daunting. I took a position at a community mental health center, where I worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds facing various challenges. This role tested my skills and adaptability, as I learned to navigate complex cases and tailor my approaches to meet clients' unique needs. Building therapeutic relationships and witnessing clients' progress fueled my passion and reaffirmed my choice to pursue this rewarding career. Throughout my journey, I have maintained a deep commitment to my professional development and self-care. I regularly attend workshops, participate in peer-supervision groups, and stay informed about the latest research in mental health. I understand the importance of resilience and self-reflection in this field, both for my well-being and that of my clients. Looking back, my journey to becoming a mental health counselor has been guided by a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Each experience, from my initial volunteer work to my clinical practice, has contributed to my growth and honed my ability to empathize, listen, and support those navigating their mental health challenges. As I continue on this path, I remain deeply committed to fostering healing, empowerment, and resilience in my clients, cherishing the privilege of being part of their journeys.

What would be important for someone to know about working with you?

As a mental health counselor, clients can expect a collaborative and supportive journey tailored to their individual needs and goals. From the moment they first reach out, my focus is on creating a welcoming environment where they feel safe and understood. During our ongoing sessions, clients can expect a structured yet flexible environment conducive to exploration and growth. I encourage open communication and invite clients to express their thoughts, feelings, and any challenges they encounter in the therapeutic process. Together, we evaluate their progress, discuss any obstacles, and celebrate their successes. I often assign homework that aligns with our therapeutic goals. These assignments may include journaling exercises, practicing coping strategies, or applying skills learned in sessions to everyday situations. Clients are encouraged to reflect on their experiences, which fosters a deeper understanding of their patterns and promotes personal growth between sessions. As clients progress, my focus shifts to equipping them with tools and strategies they can carry beyond our sessions. We work on developing resilience and coping mechanisms that empower them to handle life’s challenges independently. This approach instills confidence and encourages a proactive stance toward their mental health. I believe in the importance of feedback throughout the therapeutic process. Clients are encouraged to share their thoughts on our work together, and I remain adaptable to their evolving needs and preferences. This collaborative relationship fosters an environment of trust and openness, ensuring that they feel heard and supported at every stage of their journey.
