What is your style/approach to therapy?

I take a collaborative approach to therapy, with ongoing conversation with clients about which aspects are working well and which are working less well. I believe my clients have the capacity for change, and my job is to help them make the most of their own strengths. As I get to know a client, I learn more about their values, core beliefs, and thought and behavior patterns, and use these to inform our conversation and approach to addressing current issues.

Are there any recurring themes or issues you’ve noticed as you treat people in your area of specialization, and how has this insight guided your approach?

In my work treating substance use and other co-occurring disorders, one common theme is that even behaviors that the client most wants to change serve some purpose to the individual. Overuse of substances causes temporary euphoria and/or relief from unpleasant feelings. Avoiding stressful situations keeps someone from experiencing anxiety or discomfort in that moment. Procrastination delays an unpleasant or difficult task. However these and other behaviors can hold people back from their goals and desires in life. When working with clients to make changes, I help them to find more effective ways to get the benefit they have been attempting to get from the target behavior, and/or explore how their actions are connected to their values to increase motivation to get through temporary discomfort on the way to achieving larger goals.

What do you view as a key component of the therapeutic relationship?

There is no therapeutic relationship without the ability to be open. As a therapist, one way I facilitate openness is by demonstrating non-judgement. How can I help someone make changes if I look down on them for their behavior? Additionally, I strive to be open and honest when I don't know something or make a mistake. Therapists are human too, and I hope that showing that humanity helps me connect with my clients in a way that builds trust. That said, no therapist is a perfect fit for every client. I want you to feel supported, even if that means finding a different therapist who you click better with. If after a few sessions you find the therapeutic relationship lacking, I will help problem-solve and provide referrals for other therapists if necessary.

Work History

In graduate school, I completed rotations in clinical settings including a general psychological clinic, eating disorder partial hospitalization program, and outpatient addiction clinics. I then completed internship at the Seattle VA, working rotations in their outpatient addiction clinic, mental health intensive outpatient program, and primary care mental health. After internship, I was hired as a staff psychologist at the VA, working in the addiction clinic. Here, I worked with clients experiencing both substance use concerns and other mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, personality disorders, and mood disorders. Since these clients were often experiencing such complex issues, it was important to me to be flexible in treatment planning, tailoring approach to the needs of each specific client.
