Get To Know Me
What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I recognized that personal experiences of pain, loss, hurt and failures can become strengths I use to feel and help other people. I appreciated when others were there to support me, and I am a big believer in "paying it forward". I also have always enjoyed the science and reality behind what makes people do what they do. I don't believe behaviors, thoughts and feelings are generally pointless or inexplicable as they sometimes seem. I also don't believe that people's suffering is for nothing. I wanted to be able to live out these values and beliefs in a positive way, and working in mental health helps me do that.
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
I want to learn, understand, and grow. I have biases based on ignorance, just like anyone else. We don't know what we don't know, and we are often scared of the unknown. I would like to learn more about navigating the difficulties of life and unique cultures from my clients, and am aware that I cannot stop developing, growing and learning as a clinician. I like to have a treatment approach that is specifically tailored differently for each client based on their concerns and needs. During the therapy process, I often feel that I learn as much about myself, my blind spots, and my need to improve as much as my clients may.
In what ways do your life philosophy and treatment philosophy overlap?
I appreciate the metaphysical or spiritual concepts people bring with them or develop in therapy sessions, and strongly believe our cultures, values, and spiritual beliefs can influence each person's style of coping and healing from mental health disorders and past hurt. My own background has given me purpose and strength, and watching other people find their beliefs, values, or gain faith and a sense of purpose is a fulfilling process that I encourage in session. While learning coping skills in therapy, individuals tend to find a motivation to recover related to their personal beliefs.
