What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I was always interested in the mentally ill, what caused it and how poorly they were treated years ago. A friend of mine had psychiatric issues as well as his brother, the latter was in a state hospital for a period of time. I started reading books and watching TV whenever I could find something on the topic. I found some of the symptoms of my two friends somewhat funny, frightening and confusing to me. I asked myself, "Why do they do things that are destructive to their lives?" When I got to college my first class in Psychology finalized my purpose in life - I had to be a psychologist. By the way, the brother of my friend who was hospitalized is now a successful artist.

Work HistoryI have two work experiences that have had the most impact on me in terms of becoming a psychologist. The first was at LaRabida Children's Hospital and Research Center, a medical center affiliated with the University of Chicago. Here, I learned how to work with physicians, nurses and a medical teams. Many of the patients were abused/neglected children and I learned the numerous problems related to family issues, cultural differences and how to work successfully with them.
Secondly, was my 19 years consulting to nursing homes in the Chicago and Illinois area. A wonderful experience seeing patients from all economic, ethnic
and disabled conditions. Seeing how they can learn to cope even with the worst situations showed me the power of psychotherapy and makes their lives more purposeful and positive. Being able to be part of their change was and still makes my day.
