What does success look like in therapy? How will a client know that they are making progress?
Success in therapy is not linear. I remind my clients regularly that healing is a journey. Sometimes changes can be feel small, like no longer getting triggered by something that would normally get a big reaction, or not shutting down/dissociating. It is the internal space that is created that enables clients to respond vs. react, which helps clients regain a sense of autonomy and control in their lives. In this internal pause we can begin to get curious about our internal narrative, self talk, beliefs about other and the world and start to build a healthier relationship with ourselves, one rooted in self compassion for all parts of ourselves. When our internal landscape changes so do our relationships and the way we approach the world.
Sometimes success/healing can look like "small" behavioral changes added up over time that lead to big changes in our lives or big decisions that are in alignment with our values. In any case healing and success looks like finding relief from the struggles that brought you to therapy and finding an internal peace within ones self.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I believe healing is not about fixing what is “wrong,” but about building a kinder, more trusting relationship with yourself.
All around us we get told different message about what is "wrong" us, from society, cultural beliefs, religious dogma, familial patters, and from peers. After traumatic experiences we can internalize the events and blame ourselves. Trauma and chronic stress can shape how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us, often pulling us away from a sense of safety, connection, and inner trust. Adverse life experiences can quietly shape our beliefs, coping strategies, and sense of self, often in ways that once protected us but no longer serve us. I view therapy as a place to gently listen to these survival responses with curiosity and compassion, allowing space for healing and integration. Over time, this process can support a deeper reconnection to yourself and a sense of returning home.
In therapy we can explore how our experiences and narratives impact the relationship we have with our self. My goal is to help clients return home within themselves. If one has never felt at home within themself we will work towards building a sense of safety within ones self.
What do you view as a key component of the therapeutic relationship?
I view the key component in the therapeutic relationship as trust. Without trust there is no therapeutic relationship. My goal is to create a safe, affirming, supportive environment where the trust can grow. I understand that trust often comes with time especially if we have experienced significant relational trauma throughout our lives. We will work at a pace that feels right to you. One breath and one moment at time trust can be built. I view therapy as a collaborative process where you are the expert on yourself and I am here to help guide you on your journey towards healing.
