What’s the most profound, insightful, or interesting thing you’ve learned as a mental health professional?
"It's not about the milkshake."
This has become one of the guiding principles of my work as a therapist.
Nearly 20 years ago, while working on an inpatient psychiatric unit, I supported a young client with significant behavioral and emotional challenges. After weeks of building trust and creating a treatment plan that she had responded to beautifully, she was rewarded with a chocolate milkshake. She wanted a different flavor instead and, in a moment of overwhelming emotion, threw the milkshake against the wall.
Many people around me saw a child who was being defiant or ungrateful. I saw a child whose behavior was communicating something much deeper. The milkshake wasn't the problem.
That experience taught me one of the most important lessons of my career: behavior is communication. Whether it's anger, withdrawal, self-injury, perfectionism, conflict in a relationship, or anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere, our behaviors almost always make sense when we understand the story behind them.
As a therapist, I try to approach every person with curiosity rather than judgment. I believe lasting change comes from understanding behaviors in the context of someone's experiences, relationships, and nervous system—not simply trying to eliminate the behavior itself. When people feel truly seen and understood, they are much more likely to experience the safety, connection, and growth that make healing possible.
To this day, whenever I encounter a difficult moment in therapy or in life, I remind myself: it's not about the milkshake.

Work HistoryI have been working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families since 2007, providing mental health care across a wide range of settings and levels of care. My clinical experience has taken me across several countries, including Israel and Vietnam, as well as throughout Massachusetts, allowing me to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences.
Throughout my career, I have worked in high-acuity environments including emergency departments, inpatient psychiatric units, residential treatment programs, and Partial Hospitalization Programs, and the Department of Youth Services (DYS). These experiences have given me extensive expertise in supporting children and teens experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, self-injurious behaviors, suicidal ideation, emotional dysregulation, and other high-risk or risk-taking behaviors. I am comfortable navigating complex clinical situations while helping young people and their families feel supported, understood, and empowered.
I believe that meaningful change happens when everyone involved in a child's life works together. As a result, I have extensive experience collaborating with families, schools, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and community providers to create coordinated, individualized treatment plans that promote lasting wellbeing.
In addition to my work with children and adolescents, I have spent many years providing outpatient therapy to adults and couples. I have significant experience helping clients navigate the effects of trauma, relationship challenges, divorce and separation, parenting concerns, and major life transitions. Whether I am working with an individual, couple, or family, my approach is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in the belief that healing occurs through strong relationships, practical skill-building, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.
