Get To Know Me
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
When working with me, we work as a team. It's a collaborative effort. You're the expert in your own life, and you know what has worked in the past, what hasn't, and what you're willing to do today. I view myself as a guide. I walk alongside you. I'm not behind you, pushing you along, and I'm not dragging you along from up ahead. I'm next to you on this journey, pointing out paths that you might not have seen or considered. I know tools that can make the journey a little smoother. Some tools will be helpful, others might not fit you so well, but that's why I have many to choose from. So we can find the ones that are the right fit for your personal life experience.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
I mix talk therapy with cognitive behavioral tools and somatic tools. What that means is that we can approach a problem from a logical stance, analyzing misconceptions and misperceptions to create a more realistic, healthier perspective. Or, we can approach a problem from a body-safety perspective. We can focus on your felt experience in your stomach, in your shoulders, in your forehead. We can work on relaxing tension and developing awareness and power in body movement. All of these options are used with a trauma-informed perspective that prioritizes safety and growth. EMDR can be used to facilitate you to work through your traumatic experiences with your own knowledge and wisdom. EMDR helps to unclog blocked or stuck processing that prevents healing from traumas from occurring, and you're able to see your problem as if from a distance, helping you to see the path out on your own. All the while, I'm there for support and to facilitate the process, offering perspective and asking questions to help you to find your own answers.

Education
Capella University, Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, 2022 — Ross graduated with honors, finishing at the top of his class. Classes included ethics, multicultural competency, systems, theories, and more. Ross attended two residencies, a practicum, and two internships as part of his curriculum, deepening counseling skills and building general knowledge required to be an effective mental health counselor.
Work HistoryMy mental health experience began as a Crisis Counselor volunteer for the Crisis Text Line. Before that, I was in the military and volunteered for additional roles to raise awareness and prevent military sexual assault and suicide. I was a stay-at-home father for a few years, too, which has been one of the most demanding things I've ever done!
After volunteering for the Crisis Text Line, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in mental health. I got my degree from Capella University, and I completed internships that provided experience in community mental health roles, supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, high school counseling, group therapy, and more.
A common denominator I heard over and over again throughout my work with individuals and groups was Trauma. I decided I wanted specialized training to support people who have experienced trauma, so I became trained and certified in what many consider the gold-standard in trauma care: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
