Work History
My name is Spencer Chernick and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 115038). I have experience working with a variety of topics including self-esteem, relationships, communication, ADHD, emotional regulation, grief, life transitions, young adults, teens, and more. I take a client-centered and conversational approach in therapy, as I believe it is very important to feel empowered and like we are simply talking to another human being that cares. I utilize a combination of evidence-based therapeutic approaches known as Positive Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy; with elements of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). I am also Level 2 trained in The Gottman Method Couples Therapy and am certified in Enneagram, Enneagram Tritype, Subtypes and Instinctual Types; which I find incredibly helpful in both my individual and relationship work. Overall, my approach focuses on creating an authentic relationship that feels safe; free from needing to be anything other than your genuine self. I truly believe that we are all much stronger and capable than we give ourselves credit for; especially when it comes to creating desired change. I would love to provide support along your journey, and create that space where you can show up however you need to and know that I will listen and converse without judgement. Most importantly, I want you to know I will value your opinion throughout. No one is more of an expert on you than you. This is why I believe in working together and combining our expertise to find the best way to reach your goals. Additionally, I feel that it is important for my clients to know a little bit about who I am; as I believe it’s much better to have a relationship that goes both ways and feels comfortable. When I am not working, I enjoy activities such as playing basketball (and other backyard sports too!), watching TV/movies, and playing piano/guitar. I also really like games! So whether it’s an escape room, video/board game, or games with friends, I am always interested haha. I have been living in San Diego with my fiancé for a few years and I cannot imagine living anywhere else! I also have a cat that never feels like she gets enough attention and apparently feels that the best time to get my attention is when I am in session haha. In addition, though I take my work very seriously, I feel it is crucial to incorporate some humor and lightness into our sessions when appropriate. Simply put, I bring my authentic self to sessions and I want my clients to feel like they can do the same. I believe that it is essential to find a therapist that you feel you can connect and work well with. As a result, I offer a free 15 minute consultation so that we can discuss your current struggles and see if we feel like a good fit. If you feel that beginning therapy with me is something you may be interested in, please reach out to schedule your free consultation! I truly believe that every second is just another opportunity to turn things around, and create lasting and healing change. It would be an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to support you in your journey and help you get to where you deserve to be.
