Get To Know Me
What would be important for someone to know about working with you?
People who love working with me say the same thing as people who choose to find a different therapist: our work together isn't what they expected, because they expected it to feel a lot more formal. For those who love it, they enjoy feeling the sense of interpersonal comfort and conversational ease in each session. They enjoy that, while they don't know me personally and while our connection is professionally one-sided, they get the sense that I am a real person who genuinely hears, understands, and cares about their experience.
For those who would rather a much more formal experience, I'm happy to offer referrals! This process is too personal to be personal. :)
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I am prone to overthinking and, even if I am not trying to, my brain is often turning over events and facts to understand complicated things better. While I work on not letting this take over my life, I enjoy letting it help me and my clients understand the complexities of what they're experiencing. This helps us set the stage for figuring out what to do and how they can move forward with their values and goals in mind.
I also generally consider myself a warm and friendly person, and I bring that into sessions as well.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
How you feel about the connection between you and the therapist is of number one importance! It might take a couple sessions to get a sense of the flow, but once you get into a good rhythm, you're headed in the right direction. If you're just beginning your search, go with your gut! Schedule some consultations and don't be afraid to shop around and see what suits you best. See who you feel drawn to. And if you pick one and, even after some sessions, you're not feeling like it's a fit? Feel free to discuss it with your therapist and feel free to keep looking.
