What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
Since childhood, I have always played a mediating, listening, connecting, and advising role, whether with peers as a child and adolescent, or later finding common ground across diverse communities and building coalitions, teaching, or working in the communications field with foreign nationals from other continents. One curious fact is that, for reasons that remain a mystery to me, total strangers come up to me in public and share their life secrets with me! Psychology also combined my diverse academic and career interests in social science, philosophy, biology, creative arts, and business. These interests and experiences also enable me to connect with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds, value systems, perspectives, careers, and industries. Finally, it's incredibly rewarding to feel I'm helping people and to celebrate their progress with them. To learn more about my work visit https://OCDhotline.com.
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I was raised to always have an inquisitive, curious, open, methodical, and compassionate personality. I start work with new clients with a hunch, but I never assume I know anything without thoroughly investigating it, like a scientist or detective, and getting confirmation from you whether my hypothesis is consistent with your own experience. Through this collaborative process, I refine further and further my hypothesis and focus until you feel it's laser accurate. I won't give advice to you just because it worked for someone else. Each person is a whole universe and I love exploring it and getting to the root of the problem. It's not a cookie cutter or cookbook approach. The same symptom can have different causes in different people and require very different treatment; what works for one could be harmful to another. In addition, I see your struggle and your well intentioned attempts, which others might not appreciate. There is no shame in feeling discouraged, angry, or even pushing people away. It is simply an expression of your frustrated attempts to protect yourself, relieve your suffering, and get your universal human needs met, needs that we all share and deserve. My diverse background and inquisitive personality allows me to connect the dots, identify self-defeating behavior patterns and coping mechanisms, and show you a better way to get all you deserve in life--happy relationships, advancement in career or school, and personal fulfillment. Most importantly, I care about tangible results, eliminating symptoms permanently, not just helping clients "live with" them better. Find out more about my therapy approach at https://OCDhotline.com.
What is your style/approach to therapy?
Do results matter to you? I aim to eliminate symptoms permanently without medication, not just help you "live with" them better. Together, we will take a very comprehensive approach. Part of the therapy is highly behavioral, moving in a structured step-by-step manner directly addressing anxiety, avoidant behaviors, obsessions, compulsions, and coping skills. I use Exposure Response Prevention (ERP for OCD), prolonged exposure (panic, agoraphobia, social anxiety), cognitive behavioral therapy, CBIT (tics), habit reversal and ComBT (BFRBs). In every session, we'll practice something new in the session. It will always be something you tell me you feel comfortable doing, never pressured or scary. I'll give you practical homework exercises to practice daily in between sessions; not something time consuming, just a modicum of attention. The other half of therapy is my really getting to know you very well as a whole individual and identify other issues that might be fueling the symptoms along. With a compassionate eye, we'll identify life-long patterns of behavior, ineffective coping mechanisms, and self-limiting beliefs. These are nothing to be ashamed of. Anger, sadness, avoidance, acting out behaviors--these are all simply your well intentioned attempts to protect yourself and meet your basic universal human needs that we all share, but have been frustrated too long. I see your struggle and can help you to meet your needs more successfully and with greater satisfaction using Schema Therapy, and transformative integrative experiential approach. By the end of therapy, some people actually say they don't remember why they came to me. Find out more about my treatment approach, insurance, and money saving tips at https://OCDhotline.com.
