Education
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling , 2015 — This concentration focuses on learning to counsel and aid individuals with physical and/or psychological disabilities. Professionals in this field assist people in learning to overcome or work around their challenges to live the highest quality of life possible. Clinical rehabilitation counselors often work with other care providers, such as social workers, physical therapists, and physicians to facilitate courses of care and empowerment plans. This type of counseling focuses on the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of an individual as well as contributing relationships. I also completed coursework in alcohol and drug addictions and was able to sit and pass the exam for CADC. I completed my master's internship at a community mental health agency working with children and teens providing individual counseling in my office and I also went to the schools to see client there. I completed my practicum which included recorded counseling sessions in a prison setting working with various inmates with various charges serving their sentence at a work release prison. I was given a graduate assistantship while I was attending school, and I worked at the evaluation and developmental center. The Evaluation and Developmental Center is a comprehensive rehabilitation facility with a long history of vocational, psychological, transitional, and driver education services. I worked at the transitional independent living center program. The Living Center is organized to meet the resident’s vocational, physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs and abilities all while being able to form friendships, socialize and work toward personal independence. Services offered include meal preparation and planning, budgeting and spending skills, self-advocacy instruction, hygiene, laundry, home maintenance, safety and security, transportation training, timeliness, and social skills. Skills that are necessary to obtain and maintain successfully vocational relationships are also taught in this program. Residents are taught living skills that effect their ability to be successfully employed in their community. Living center staff work with residents to teach them to apply the independent living skills they learn in the program on the job as well.
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Bachelor of Science, Rehabilitation Services, 2006 — In this subject area studied we learn skills to help us help people with various disabilities including helping people find employment. I completed my undergraduate internship at TASC which does drug testing and reports for people who are on probation for the courts.
