In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I think therapy is valuable to everyone but needs to be done in a way that is down-to-earth, genuine, and realistic. There has to compassion, understanding, humor, and occasionally a few cuss words to help you process and resolve the hurtful things that have been done to you.
What do you think is the biggest barrier today for people seeking care?
I think the biggest barrier for people seeking relief from difficult relationships is the the shame, guilt, embarrassment, and fear you feel because of the relationship. But, the only thing you're guilty of is having a big heart that likes to help others; a trusting heart that believes in giving people lots of chances to change; and a long-held belief that every else's needs are a higher priority than yours. There is no shame in that!
I also think that remaining in an unhealthy relationship, while uncomfortable & overwhelming at times, is familiar and far less scary than change. Sometimes, people get really good at just getting by or functioning on auto-pilot, but it eventually wears you down and you find the courage and strength to try something different...starting with therapy.
