What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

I spent unintentionally my first 13 years in the field working in child welfare. It did prepare for me anything, but I also watched too many people struggle just because they didn't have someone in their corner supporting them. Then I found this quote from Desmond Tutu that suggested we move towards the root of the problem to help people. From there it only seemed right to transition to therapy and become the support people needed.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

I am beyond laid back. I even dress down. Go barefoot, BYOF (bring your own fidget), BYOB (non-alcoholic of course), lay down on the sofa and talk instead of sitting in a chair; really the choice is yours. The name of the game is your comfort. My goal is for you to be comfortable and for our shared space during session to not feel so clinical, cold or unwelcoming. After all, you and I are not so very different. I use whatever combination of methods works for the individual, and am always adapting to meet people's needs. When desired I do give "homework" for between sessions, but many times this is a preference for the client. Therapy is hard work, and oftentimes working on things you've struggled with on your own is safer/more comfortable at the end of treatment, or as you've developed some additional resources.

In what ways have your personal experiences influenced your work with your clients?

My personal experiences have helped shape my experience, my education, and my wisdom. I don't always share the details, but I'm always excited to help someone avoid a negative experience I've had if I can or to help them heal quicker. We cannot separate our personal experiences from our person, but we can understand and work with them so as not to negatively affect others.

Work History

Wendy Dodd, Licensed Masters of Social Work (LMSW), is a compassionate and dedicated therapist committed to helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and find healing. Wendy earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Kansas in May 2015, following her Bachelor’s degree in Intercultural Studies from Oklahoma Wesleyan University. With specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Wendy utilizes a diverse range of therapeutic modalities, including art therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed care. Her approach is strengths-based and solution-focused, emphasizing empowerment and growth in her clients. Wendy is deeply committed to fostering compassion and understanding, recognizing the variety of experiences and backgrounds each individual brings to the therapeutic space. Wendy specializes in trauma recovery, helping individuals process past experiences so they no longer interfere with daily life. She also works with clients who have endured abuse, neglect, dissociation, domestic violence, generalized anxiety, depression, and much more. Wendy’s experience spans working with individuals aged 4 to 67, tailoring her methods to meet the unique needs of each client. Before transitioning to counseling, Wendy spent 13 years in the field of child welfare. There, she witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by families and individuals within the foster care system. This experience deepened her belief in the power of human connection and the profound impact of having just one supportive person in someone’s corner. Her dedication to reducing the number of families experiencing foster care inspired her to become a therapist. Wendy is inspired by the quote, “There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.” This philosophy guides her mission to address root causes and create meaningful change. When working with Wendy, clients can expect a warm, collaborative, and personalized approach. She strives to create a safe space where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported on their journey toward healing and growth. In her spare time, Wendy enjoys reading, playing games, and traveling. She has visited nine countries and continues to explore new destinations to ensure she does not become too comfortable. These experiences enrich her understanding of diverse perspectives, further informing her empathetic approach to therapy.
