Our first visit (or two) will focus on assessment and goal planning. I will explain any diagnoses we are working with, get to know you and what is keeping you from living your life the way you want to, explore what your life would look like without “the problem” that motivated you to make that first appointment, and help you to define your goals for therapy. As we continue to work together over some weeks or months, my own goal is to come to a time when you are comfortable and confident identifying and achieving your life goals on your own. This timeframe is different for everyone; and of course you can always return to therapy if needed.
My approach to therapy is Humanistic and Client Centered. This means that I believe that all people are valuable, capable of change, and likely to do so given the right conditions. In therapy, I believe that it is the relationship between therapist and client that allows positive change to happen. I also use tools from Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. You will always be focusing on some aspect of your life between sessions, making small changes and tracking the way you feel, think, and act. Most change–most of your life!--happens outside of the therapy session. We may spend time talking about your past, but always with a focus on how it is impacting your present. My focus is pragmatic, anchored in the here and now, with a view toward the future.
