How do you determine therapy goals with clients? What does that process look like?
Therapy goals and objectives will be determined with you (the client) as the driver, and myself as the co-pilot. My process throughout therapy is very collaborative and client-centered. We will come up with goals together and work on all objectives weekly in session.
What does a first session with you look like?
Our first session will involve some information gathering, in order for me to understand the current concerns and themes that you would like to address in therapy. After that, we will form a plan to work through specific and attainable goals while working together.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
Therapy is for EVERYONE. Life does not leave any one of us untouched. Therapy does not mean there is anything wrong with you. Therapy does not mean you're "messed up" or "broken." This is a process of gaining insight, healing, and creating skills to help you cope with life's pressures and live with difficult memories.
Specialties
Abuse/Survivors of abuse
Abuse includes any significant mistreatment along the lines of psychical, emotional, sexual, verbal, and neglect. Survivors of abuse may experience negative thoughts and feelings, flashbacks, distrust of others, social withdrawal, self-harm, and increased likelihood of developing mental health and substance abuse issues.
Adolescent mental health
Adolescent mental health focuses on adolescent-specific experiences including physical and cognitive development, social and environmental factors, sex, sexual identification and orientation, emotional processing, and substance use. Given the influence that parents/guardians have on adolescents, home life is a particularly important consideration.
Attachment issues
Children that experience parents and/or guardians that are avoidant, ambivalent, or resistant from an early age, may develop attachment issues. This can manifest as difficulty forming or maintaining friendships, romantic relationships and empathetic bonds throughout life, as well as other issues.
Life transitions
Positive and negative change can be difficult, including things like moving, breaking up, adjusting to parenthood, or changing careers. It’s normal to feel stressed, however, life transitions can inhibit people from living healthy lifestyles.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is a condition that is precipitated by a perceived terrifying event. This event need not occur directly to the person but may happen vicariously—having seen something terrible happen to another person. The condition may last months or years while symptoms include ruminating thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, intense anxiety when triggered, and potential substance abuse in attempt to cope.
